PRESIDENTIAL VILLA . . . I just love when parties are held in presidential villas on island. It sure doesn’t happen very often, but on Friday the Andaz Maui resort in Wailea will put on a spread in its room that rules the roost.
Andaz Executive Chef Isaac Bancaco and resort chefs de cuisines Mi Jin Kang and Ritchard Cariaga will give attendees a chance to savor coveted dishes they served to 75 James Beard Foundation VIPs in New York City in May.
“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this achievement than with a family-style dinner at home, on Maui where I was born and raised,” says Bancaco.
The strolling reception-style dinner will feature interactive stations of gourmet pupu. The cost is $150 per person. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. Call 573-1234.
The Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort just celebrated its 25th anniversary Sunday by launching a namesake custom craft beer by Maui Brewing Co. Called Grand Wailea Gose (goh-suh), it is available now, icy cold and on tap in four restaurants and lounges.
“We chose the gose style, because we like the dominant flavors of tartness with herbal characteristics and saltiness,” says Shane Komine, new director of Restaurants & Bars at Grand Wailea. “It pairs well with seafood here in Hawaii, and is refreshing at the pool and beach. Li hing mui is the sour flavor, and it’s perfect for the gose.”
Born and raised on Oahu, Komine explains that li hing mui, the Chinese salty dried plum, is a “a local flavor, and it’s everyone’s favorite crack seed.”

Heck, GC may even need to buy the adjoining parking lot, which happens to be for sale. People were lined up out the door for the Spanish rolls, fried chicken and more on Lower Main Street after opening and parking was tight.

“Everyone is invited to dress in costume and a lot of people wear their pink clothes,” says General Manager Seth Kuperman. “We’ll have a silent auction, raffle tickets, live music with Marty Dread playing this year. It’s an all-around good time. You may order off of the regular menu and happy hour starts at 2 p.m. We’ll have some sort of a pink-flavored cocktail for sure.”

“The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” says Mahatma Gandhi. The saying was found on brainyquote.com by humane society board member David Cain, who adores his soft and furry pet bunnies.
Roy Yamaguchi’s upcoming Humble Market Kitchin that will open at the Wailea Marriott Resort & Spa in December had its name partially wrong in a story I wrote about partner Shep Gordon on Sunday. Kitchin is with an “in.” Sorry!
O’o Farm in Kula will present its next Chef Challenge on Oct. 2 with Pacific’o in a contest with Roy’s Ka’anapali at the farm’s beautiful open-air kitchen. The teams will use farm ingredients and will get a surprise protein to use. “We will have lunch for everyone, farm tours throughout the day and some wine tastings available as well,” says partner Stephan Bel-Robert.
