PARTY TIME . . . This weekend, Maui will be jumping with food-and-fun-filled events from Taste of Upcountry on Saturday as a benefit for Montessori School of Maui to the 30th annual Garden Party fundraiser for the Maui Academy of Performing Arts.
“In the true spirit of community, Montessori School of Maui is purposefully gathering friends, neighbors and families on campus for this lively fall tradition of sharing a meal to taste and toast local agriculture, while investing in a bright future for our island,” says Alison Grimes, school director of development.
At the Garden Party, dozens of top Maui restaurants will entice with their cuisine, such as Shearwater Tavern with slow-roasted bourbon pork, aged white-cheddar grits and kale salad and Hula Grill presenting deviled eggs, lump crab, Duroc bacon and micro greens.
“Enjoy Broadway-caliber entertainment featuring the stars of ‘Into the Woods,’ a chefs’ festival with gourmet cuisine from Maui restaurants, fine wines, locally brewed beer, live jazz, a silent auction and fresh art,” says MAPA’s Peter Liu, director of Marketing and IT. “Paintings will be created on-site to be auctioned off not long after the paint has dried. And Alan Jahns of Paradise Beverages is coordinating the wines to be poured.”
Maui’s own five-time Grammy nominee Amy Hanaiali’i will be pouring her award-winning Hanaiali’i line of wines of Napa Valley, and Jahns will serve champagne from the esteemed Laurent Perrier house in France. For reservations, call MAPA at 244-8760.
Word has it that Lineage Restaurant is getting set to open its doors in The Shops at Wailea on Oct. 15. Operated by “Top Chef” fan favorite and Maui restaurateur (Tin Roof) Sheldon Simeon, the cutting-edge restaurant will feature master mixologist Aaron Acala-Mosley, who jumped ship from Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea.

OOM-PAH-PAH . . . It seems just like yesterday, but it’s been 20 years since Davos, Switzerland, native and Chef Bernard Weber opened a little Euro eatery in the Kahului Industrial Area.
“We’ll celebrate Oktoberfest every weekend next month. On the weekend of Oct. 5 and 6 as a special thank you to the community, we will charge the same price for the German buffet as we did 20 years ago,” says Weber about the feasts at Brigit & Bernard’s Garden Cafe. “It will be $35 for all you can eat. On the remaining three weekends, the price will be $45 per person.”
The doors open at 6 p.m. and the buffet and the band start at 6:30 p.m., featuring Dorfmusikanten. Do the chicken dance, raise a stein of Spaten, and indulge in lentil soup with sausage, veal and pork bratwurst, sauerbraten, German pork roast, warm potato salad, spaetzle, sauerkraut, roast chicken and Hungarian goulash. Add-ons are apple strudel with vanilla sauce and Black Forest cake. For reservations, call Brigit & Bernards at 877-6000.
You may also kick up your heels at Oktoberfest from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Maui Brewing Co. Kihei. Chef Jojo Vasquez will take your taste buds to Munich with handcrafted stuffed brats and soft pretzels, house mustard, beer cheese and lots of MBC beer. The Haiku Hillbillies will perform. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Maui Brewing Co. Kahana, savor Jagerschnitzel along with house-smoked summer sausage by Chef James Furnish. Meet the brewers and have fun. Call 669-3474.
