‘THE ESSENCE’ OF SURFING, MACC’S CASTLE THEATER

Catch the celebratory surfing film, “The Essence,” by Bud Browne — father of the surf-film genre — at 7 p.m. in Castle Theater at Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. The film showcases more than 50 of the sport’s greatest legends. Following the screening, contemporary surfers talk story about their career influences and ambitions. STARRY NIGHT CINEMA SCREENS ‘SMALLFOOT’

Bring low-back beach chairs and blankets and spread out on the lawn for a screening of “Smallfoot” beginning at 6:30 p.m. at A&B Amphitheater at the MACC. Gates open at 5 p.m., so come early and enjoy preshow entertainment, prize giveaway and a keiki art activity. Purchase food and drinks from local food trucks. ‘IT’S ONLY A PLAY’ OPENS AS PRODUCER AWAITS REVIEW

ProArts “It’s Only A Play” — a glimpse into the angst experienced by theater folk — hits the stage at 7:30 p.m. at ProArts Playhouse in Azeka Place Makai in Kihei. The story revolves around a well-to-do first-time Broadway producer who throws an opening-night party at which guests nervously anticipate reviews. ENDLESS WINTER BLOCK PARTY IN LAHAINA TOWN
