Fire closes restaurant in Kapalua

The Plantation House Restaurant in Kapalua was closed Thursday after a fire Wednesday night that caused an estimated $600,000 in damage, officials said.

Other operations in the building that includes the golf clubhouse weren’t affected by the fire, said Mike Jones, general manager of Kapalua Golf. He said Thursday that it hadn’t been determined exactly when the restaurant would reopen, but “it’ll be a short time.”

About a half-dozen fans were placed by the clubhouse, adjacent to the restaurant, to blow the smell of smoke outside.

The fire was reported at 9 p.m. while the restaurant was open for business, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Jones said only a few guests and staff were in the restaurant and were easily evacuated.

Fire crews from Napili, Lahaina and Kahului responded to the fire at the restaurant on Plantation Club Drive. Fire crews arrived to find a 5-by-5-foot section of the roof on fire at the clubhouse and also fire in the attic area, Mainaga said.

The fire was under control at 10:30 p.m. and extinguished at 1 a.m. Thursday, he said.

Damage was estimated at $500,000 to the structure and $100,000 to its contents. No injuries were reported. The fire’s cause remained under investigation.

“From a good point of view, no one was hurt and golf operations are up and running,” Jones said.
