Fire damages Kihei restaurant

Three’s Bar & Grill closed indefinitely

A kitchen fire at Three’s Bar & Grill early Sunday has forced the Kihei eatery to close indefinitely, according to the restaurant’s owners.

At 5:49 a.m. Sunday, fire crews received a call about a structure fire at Three’s Bar & Grill at 1945 S. Kihei Road, Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto said. When firefighters reached the scene at the Kihei Kalama Village complex at 5:53 a.m., they found smoke coming from the front of the business. They entered the restaurant and located a fire in the kitchen area. It was brought under control at 6:04 a.m. and extinguished by 11:09 a.m.

No one was at Three’s when the fire started, but an employee at a nearby business smelled smoke and went outside to investigate, Taomoto said. The worker saw smoke coming from the restaurant and called 911.

The fire affected about 25 percent of the restaurant’s space and caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the building and $100,000 to its contents, Taomoto said.

Three’s Bar & Grill announced Sunday that it would “be closed for the time being.” Its wedding, event and boat catering business will continue through its sister restaurant, Fork & Salad in Kihei. The owners said that they are working to place their staff at other Maui establishments until the restaurant can reopen.

Three’s is run by chefs Travis Morrin, Cody Christopher and Jaron Blosser. The restaurant and catering business pulls together Hawaiian, Southwestern and Pacific Rim cuisine, according to its website.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Taomoto said. There were no injuries and the fire did not impact nearby businesses.

Crews from Kihei, Wailea and Kahului responded to the fire.
