Wind and high-surf advisories have been issued for areas of Maui County through Monday, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The wind advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. today through 6 p.m. Monday. High pressure will build today, increasing winds to advisory levels over parts of the state conducive to windier conditions, including the island of Lanai, according to the weather service.
Winds from the east at 25 to 35 mph with gusts over 50 mph are forecast. Strong winds can cause loose objects to blow around and can cause power outages. Motorists should use caution, especially those operating high-profile vehicles.
The high-surf advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. today through 6 p.m. Monday for the north-facing shores of Maui and the east-facing shores of Maui and Molokai.
Surf is forecast to build to 18 to 24 feet along north-facing shores this morning before declining Monday. Along east-facing shores, the surf is expected to build to 6 to 10 feet tonight and maintain through Monday, according to the weather service. Surf estimates are of the face, or front, of a wave.
High surf can cause strong breaking waves and shore break as well as strong longshore and rip currents. Beachgoers should use caution and heed all advice from ocean safety officials.
