A grease blockage in a sewer lateral caused a 1,237-gallon wastewater overflow in Kahului on Sunday morning, the county Department of Environmental Management reported.
The wastewater flowed from a manhole located at 444 Hana Highway and traveled from the parking lot area into a nearby drainage trench. The overflow was reported at 10:30 a.m. and was stopped by 11:30 a.m. No wastewater reached the ocean.
The county pumped up the wastewater, cleared and disinfected the spill site and notified the state Department of Health.
