Kalama said the students had a busy six weeks, including doing community service for the Maui Food Bank and Maui Humane Society and taking a field trip to the island of Lanai. “I wanted to work hard because I wanted them to work hard,” Kalama said. “I have to set a good example for them.” Twenty-four students, ages 12 to 14, and six mentors, ages 15 to 18, participated in the program designed to teach leadership skills, share opportunities and teach the importance of giving back to the community and the island.
Firefighters on a balcony spray water upward while trying to contain a fire at the Marco Polo building in Honolulu on Friday. On Monday, Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell introduced a bill that would require sprinklers in all high-rise buildings regardless of when they were constructed. Fire officials said that a sprinkler system would have confined the Marco Polo blaze to the unit where it started.
