Maui Police Department Summer Leadership Program students and mentors perform a hula during Friday evening’s graduation at Maui Waena Intermediate School. Haley Kalama (first photo), 18, a 2017 graduate of Kamehameha Schools Maui, was named Outstanding Mentor; and Elijah Uwekoolani, 14, was named Outstanding Student. Kalama said the students had a busy six weeks, including doing community service for the Maui Food Bank and Maui Humane Society and taking a field trip to the island of Lanai. “I wanted to work hard because I wanted them to work hard,” Kalama said. “I have to set a good example for them.” Twenty-four students, ages 12 to 14, and six mentors, ages 15 to 18, participated in the program designed to teach leadership skills, share opportunities and teach the importance of giving back to the community and the island.
