One Maui Police Department officer was fired and suspensions ranging from one to 10 days were ordered for 13 officers, as part of internal investigations and actions concluded in the first half of the year, police reported.
The firing was ordered in June for a September 2015 incident when money was reported missing from a man's wallet after an encounter with a police officer, according to police. The officer resigned Nov. 19, 2015.
Ten-day suspensions were ordered for abuse of a family household member and for a fourth-degree assault arrest following verbal or physical abuse with a spouse while off duty and out of the state, both in October.
A seven-day suspension was ordered for an officer who didn't respond to a call for service and falsified a police report in May 2016.
A five-day suspension was ordered for an officer who called in sick but was seen performing at a musical event in December.
A three-day suspension was ordered for a supervisor who didn't respond to an abuse-type incident in August. A three-day suspension and transfer were ordered for an officer who acted inappropriately in public while off duty in July 2016.
An officer who was off duty and driving a police vehicle was suspended for two days and ordered to undergo defensive driver training after colliding into a vehicle in front of the officer in October.
One-day suspensions were ordered for an officer who failed to properly and thoroughly investigate an incident and an officer who failed to properly supervise the investigation of an incident in August; and for an officer who was on duty and lost control of a vehicle at excessive speed and hit a dirt embankment in September.
Other one-day suspensions were for losing a speed laser gun in August and for finding a speed laser gun missing while making traffic stops in December.
A one-day suspension also was ordered for an officer who denied a man's request to be escorted to a home to retrieve personal belongings under a protective order in August.
Disciplinary action was held in abeyance for a former employee who failed to properly document an incident involving an officer in July 2016.
Police reported ordering written reprimands to an off-duty officer who violated the right of way and collided into another vehicle in August and to an on-duty officer who collided into a vehicle entering the parking area at the Wailuku Police Station in June 2016.
Written reprimands also were given to an employee who transmitted a lewd joke over a police channel and to an employee who participated in the joke in August.
Other written reprimands were for failing to report for duty at a Maui Fair booth in October and for insubordination by failing to meet with a supervisor in April 2016.
Oral reprimands were ordered for nine motor vehicle accidents -- reversing into a mailbox in December, hitting a concrete support while reversing in July 2016, hitting the corner of a building while reversing in February 2016, hitting a wooden fence while reversing in August, hitting a plumeria tree while reversing in September, hitting a wooden fence post while reversing in September, failing to negotiate a turn and hitting curbing in August, reversing into a vehicle in a private parking lot in November and colliding into a vehicle in a private parking lot in October.
Other oral reprimands were for outside employment while on injury leave from May to November 2016 and for failing to properly collect and log prisoner's property in July 2016.
Two allegations were determined to be unfounded. Ten complaints weren't sustained.
From January to June, police reported concluding internal investigations into 38 incidents involving 46 employees.
