Program available to Molokai residents
Molokai residents can start trading in their old appliances for new, more energy-efficient models this month, as part of Sust’ainable Molokai and Hawaii Energy’s Hui Up! Program.
The program offers a choice of a 17.5- or 21.2-cubic-foot, energy-efficient refrigerator from General Electric at a greatly reduced cost in exchange for older, less-efficient models. Once an applicant is accepted into the program, a Sust’ainable Molokai representative will schedule a visit with the participant to conduct an energy audit and share additional program details.
Molokai has some of the highest energy costs in the country, said Brian Kealoha, executive director of Hawaii Energy. Replacing an old refrigerator can save each household up to $400 a year on its utility bill. The Hui Up! Program has already replaced 350 refrigerators, saving Molokai families more than $100,000 on their annual bills, according to Emillia Noordhoek, executive director of Sust’ainable Molokai.
The sign-up period lasts until July 31. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis for families that meet the minimum eligibility requirements. First deliveries for appliances are scheduled for the end of August. To apply, visit sustainablemolokai.org/huiup4 or call Sust’ainable Molokai at (808) 560-5410.
