Get the Drift and Bag It volunteers, including the Johnson family of mom Kasumi (first photo), dad Noah, Luka, 5, and Evan, 3, collect trash along the shoreline of Kahului Harbor on Saturday morning. Kasumi Johnson gets help from Evan in the second photo. Cigarette butts (third photo) litter the ground near the small-boat ramp at Kahului Harbor on Saturday. Organizers of the 31st annual cleanup of marine debris said volunteers were collecting litter at more than 20 sites around the island Saturday. Cataloging data on the types of debris and how much is found is a key component of Get the Drift and Bag It. The monthlong series of cleanups is presented by Malama Maui Nui, a Keep America Beautiful Affiliate. It is part of a global initiative to remove plastics and other trash from the Earth’s oceans, lakes and waterways.
