Former con man offers free movie, fraud presentation

Con-man-turned-FBI-consultant Frank Abagnale will give a presentation next month on Maui. His exploits were the basis for the 2002 movie “Catch Me If You Can.”
The Maui News – A free showing of the movie “Catch Me If You Can” will be presented at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Regal Maui Mall Megaplex 12, nearly three weeks ahead of the in-person appearance of con-man-turned-FBI-consultant Frank Abagnale, according to an announcement.
Abagnale will be on Maui Oct. 21 to help consumers learn how to protect their identity from scammers. He’ll also appear Oct. 18 on Oahu.
Abagnale will appear in person for a presentation at 9 a.m. Oct. 21 at the King Kamehameha Golf Club. Tickets are required. Seating is limited.

The 2002 movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks was based on the life of Abagnale, “one of the most successful identity thieves in U.S. history,” the announcement says.
“During his criminal career, which began when he was just 16, Abagnale forged more than $2.5 million in checks and posed as an airline pilot, doctor and lawyer before his capture at age 21.”
His exploits became a best-selling book and the basis for the movie. DiCaprio played Abagnale.
The event is sponsored by AARP Hawaii.
“Abagnale became a good guy after going to prison. For the last 40 years, he’s helped the FBI outsmart con artists. He’s also joined forces with the AARP Fraud Watch Network and AARP Hawaii to teach you how to protect yourself and your family from identity theft,” the AARP says.
