Storytelling as a tool topic of talk

Akaku Upstairs will presents “Storytelling as a Marketing Tool” with Shaggy Jenkins of KAKU 88.5 FM from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at 333 Dairy Road in Kahului.

Jenkins will discuss the importance of storytelling in business, covering online, print and in-person marketing, according to an announcement. He will share the essential elements needed to convey a successful message to either gain a new client or solidify an existing one.

Youth ministry plans fundraisers

The youth ministry program at St. Anthony Church in Wailuku announces its fall quarter of events and fundraisers.

Children ages 1 to 10 years old are invited to a “Trunk and Treat” between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31 in the parking area next to the church. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Along with trick-or-treating among the various vehicle trunks, there will be a keiki costume contest, as well as a best decorated trunk contest. Presale tickets are on sale for Tru-Grindz Lau Lau Plate for $10 each. Ticket sales run through Friday. Pickup will be on Nov. 4 only between 10 a.m. and noon from the St. Anthony School cafeteria. Proceeds benefit its travel expenses to the Los Angeles Youth Ministry Congress in Anaheim, Calif., next March 2018.

To augment its funds to travel, the group will also be holding a car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 4 through the circle driveway fronting the St. Anthony School Cafeteria. Pre-sale tickets sell for $5 or simply drive in for a wash.

Jamba Juice will be on sale during the car wash for $2.50 for a POG Dream or Orange Dream cup.

School bazaar will support STEMworks

Maui Waena Intermediate School students will present their annual bazaar to raise funds for the school’s STEMworks program from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 28 at the school, 795 Onehee Ave. in Kahului. The STEMworks program nurtures development of skills in media, robotics and agriculture during after-school hours.

There will be food, rummage items, student project displays, crafts, plants and a silent auction. The school is also collecting items from the community ahead of time to be sold at the event.

Free film offered about Baha’u’llah

A screening of the film “Light to the World” will be sponsored by the Baha’is of Makawao at 7 p.m. Saturday at the University of Hawaii Maui College science building auditorium, ‘Ike Le’a, Room 144. The film is about Baha’u’llah, a spiritual visionary born 200 years ago. Baha’is around the world are celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Baha’u’llah.

Smart Driver Class Saturday in Kahului

AARP’s Smart Driver Class will be offered from 8:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Roselani Place, 55 Papa Ave. in Kahului. The class is designed for drivers 50 years and older, but all adults are welcome to attend. The emphasis is to become more aware of common age-related physical changes, how they affect one’s driving ability and how to compensate.

The $20 fee (cash or check) will be collected at the beginning of the class. AARP members receive a $5 discount with proof of membership. Some insurance carriers offer discounts to those who complete the class.

Political cartoonist to speak at meeting

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Michael Ramriez will address the Rotary Club of Kahului during its noon meeting Monday at Tante’s Island Cuisine at the Maui Seaside Hotel, 100 W. Kaahumanu Ave. in Kahului.

Ramirez’s political cartoons have been syndicated to more than 400 different media outlets. His work may be viewed at michaelpramirez.com/index.html.

VA home loans to be topic of talk

Tony Dias, a Veterans Affairs home loan specialist, will host a free VA Home Loan Seminar from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the J. Walter Cameron Center, 95 Mahalani St. in Wailuku.

This seminar is where veterans can learn how to utilize their VA home loan benefit to purchase or refinance a home up to $657,800 with no money down and no private mortgage insurance, or have more than one VA loan at a time.

Pumpkin Patch set at Lahainaluna

The Lahainaluna High School Future Farmers of America program will present a Pumpkin Patch event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the school’s agricultural fields. Pumpkins will be offered for sale. Only cash payments will be accepted. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.

Funds will support FFA members’ travel costs to state FFA conferences, leadership camps and field trips as well as scholarships for graduating seniors.
