2 min read

Police were investigating the death of a man found Friday morning next to the Kahului Elementary School campus.

A man's lifeless body was found at 6:46 a.m. near the campus at 410 S. Hina Ave., police said.

The area near the body was closed off while police investigated the scene.

Police spokesman Lt. Gregg Okamoto confirmed there was an ongoing investigation.

Police reported finding "no obvious signs of foul play or suspicious injuries."

In a letter to parents, faculty and staff, school Principal Keoni Wilhelm said police were investigating the death of an individual that took place overnight.

"Staff who were on campus during the early-morning hours before school starts immediately took action in cooperation with emergency services to redirect students away from the scene," he said.

Students remained safe, and classes were unaffected, Wilhelm said.

"This loss has deeply affected our school community," he said, extending "our deepest condolences" to the man's family and friends.

Kahului Elementary School counselors and behavioral health specialists were available to help students and staff members, he said.

Wilhelm said that he could not confirm whether students saw the man's body. He said students were "grieving" and "unable to articulate what they saw."
