WAILUKU -- Mark Walker was approved by the Maui County Council as the county's Director of Finance on Friday.
Walker, the former deputy director, had been the acting director since the resignation of former director Danny Agsalog on Sept. 30.
The finance director's position pays $131,118 annually.
Walker has a bachelor of arts degree in small business management from the University of Northern Colorado and has held upper-level financial management positions with the Bank of Hawaii from 1992 to 1999 and 2010 to 2011, according to a committee report. He has been serving as deputy director of finance since 2013.
According to the Yakima City website, Agsalog is its new finance and budget director for the city in Washington state.
In other unrelated council matters:
• On second and final reading, the council approved an amendment to the state land use district classification from agricultural to rural district for a property at 4356 Hana Highway. The 7.2 acres will be used for a 100 percent affordable housing project containing 25 single-family lots. It is being proposed by GTH Land Co. The council approved the fast-track housing project on Nov. 3.
• The council filed a bill that would have granted the Makila Kai project in Launiupoko a district boundary amendment from agriculture to rural in the state land use district for a nearly 15-acre affordable housing project site. The 49-unit housing project would have contained a mix of residential workforce housing and market-rate agricultural lots. The entire project was to be developed on nearly 80 acres that would contain 25 residential workforce housing units on half-acre lots and 24 market-rate agricultural lots on 1.5 to 2 acres.
There were concerns about ocean pollution, water supply and impacts on nearby Native Hawaiian families.
