County mulling having free WiFi in its facilities

The Maui News

Maui County’s Department of Management is trying to gauge the amount of interest by potential vendors to make internet access available at county facilities, including the War Memorial Stadium and Gymnasium, the Lahaina Civic Center, the Iron Maehara Stadium and the South Maui gymnasium, now under construction.

“The internet has become a necessity and is no longer a luxury of life,” said Managing Director Keith Regan. “It’s how we communicate, share our thoughts, interact with one another and have become an integral part of our collective lives.”

The county’s aim is to provide internet access at no cost for basic usage and nominal cost for higher bandwidth access, he said.

A vendor would install, manage and maintain a wireless WiFi internet access system at various county locations. County community centers in Wailuku, Pukalani, Kihei, Lanai and Molokai also are being eyed as candidates for public internet access.

The first phase of internet access may be provided as early as March.

Prospective vendors may request information at Submissions are due Dec. 29.

Information gathered during a request for information process may be used for the county to prepare a request for proposals.
