A Kihei home was left without power after a fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damages Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said.
Fire crews from Kihei, Wailea and Kahului responded to a structure fire just before 1 p.m. at a single-story home at 1672 Kahaone Pl., Capt. Paul Haake said. Upon reaching the house, firefighters discovered heavy smoke coming from the roof's ventilation openings.
Firefighters found there was a fire within a wall that divides the main house from an extension, Haake said. Estimated damages to the structure and contents were $5,000 each.
There were no indications of arson, Haake said.
Electrical power to the home could not be turned back on after fire damaged some electrical wiring, he added.
No one was home when the fire was discovered, Haake said. Neighbors called 911 after hearing the smoke alarms within the house and saw smoke.
Haake did not know how many people live at the home or whether they were displaced.
The American Red Cross is assisting with the residents' needs for food, clothing and shelter, officials said. Caseworkers planned to follow up with the residents in the coming weeks.
