The federal government shutdown that began at midnight Friday led to partial closures at Haleakala National Park on Saturday, including the loss of sunrise viewing opportunities today.
Haleakala's Summit District would be closed during sunrise viewing hours, from 3 to 7 a.m., during the lapse of federal funding, park spokeswoman Polly Angelakis said.
The park will remain as accessible as possible while still following applicable laws and procedures, she said.
"Access may change without notice, and there are no park-provided services," she said in an email. "All restrooms, visitor centers and other facilities are closed."
Park trails at the summit and in Kipahulu remained open, but "emergency medical response is extremely limited," park officials said earlier. The Hosmer Grove and Kipahulu campgrounds remained open, but without restroom or other facilities.
Cabin permits will not be issued during the closure, officials said. Visitors with camping or cabin permits should make other plans and seek a refund after the reopening of the park.
Park-specific road, weather and trail condition updates won't be available during the closure. Website and social media will not be updated. Volunteer projects are canceled.
