Maui County Council Member Don Guzman filed nomination papers Thursday officially making him a candidate for mayor.
The three-term council member currently holds the Kahului residency seat.
He joins former Council Member Mike Victorino in filing officially for the county's top elected office, according to the state Office of Elections website.
In an announcement, Guzman unveiled his campaign slogan as "Leadership that Listens." That reflects "what Guzman believes the public elects a mayor for, and is lacking in so many decisions today."
This announcement pledged that Guzman, 48, would "always take the time to listen, to always take the time to listen to all sides and be open to all people."
"We need to move past simply stating the problem and begin bringing real solutions forward," the announcement said.
The candidate said he wants to address the "crisis in affordable housing and infrastructure, while preserving the county's natural resources and cultural heritage. Prioritizing the completion of community plan updates with valuable public input and deliberation is a must."
The candidate said his work as a council member helped preserve coastal open space and park lands, supported economic diversification and maintained progress with alternative energy generation. Guzman pledged to "continue to advocate for a transparent and efficient government operated with integrity, accountability and aloha."
"Government needs to restore the people's trust, and I intend to do that," he said.
Guzman is an attorney and former Maui County prosecutor. He left his practice in 2012 to serve on the County Council. He chairs the council's Parks, Recreation, Energy and Legal Affairs Committee.
He is married to Wailuku physician Dr. Rose Guzman. The couple has three children.
