Emergency exercise planned next week

A large-scale emergency operations exercise will be conducted next week beginning Monday, according to an announcement.

Officials asked a post-false-alarm, jittery public not to be alarmed by exercise participants dressed in full tactical gear or hazardous materials suits. Most visible activity will be on Wednesday and Thursday.

Activities will happen between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and they could start as early as after midnight Thursday and run well into the night, a Hawaii National Guard official said.

Exercises will be at the Private First Class Anthony T. Kahoohanohano Armory (formerly the Puunene Armory), the University of Hawaii Maui College, Maalaea Harbor and Kahului Airport, the official said. There may be exercises elsewhere on Maui as well.

Agencies and personnel participating in the exercises include the Hawaii National Guard’s 93rd Civil Support Team, the U.S. Coast Guard, paramedics, airport security, Maui police officers and firefighters.

For more information, call the Hawaii National Guard Public Affairs Office at (808) 733-4258.
