First photo: Baldwin High School sophomore Heather Osterstock, 16, watches her team's helicopter rise into the air after releasing it inside the University of Hawaii Maui College's Ka'a'ike Building on Saturday morning while competing in the Maui Regional Science Olympiad. The helicopter she made with fellow sophomore Amanda Pacheco was constructed with balsa wood, tissue paper, beads and aluminum tubing and was dubbed "Potato." It stayed aloft for 18 seconds for a score of 19.8 and moved the girls into second place in the competition.

Though the ultralight craft made of balsa wood, kevlar, mylar and carbon fiber had some navigational issues and bumped into a couple walls, it remained aloft for 54 seconds to move the King Kekaulike duo into first place. They said their helicopter was named "Bob."
