Fire burned a vacant, 900-square-foot home nearly to the ground Saturday morning, the Maui Fire Department reported.
There were no injuries.
Upcountry firefighters responded to a 6:03 a.m. alarm from residents and passers-by, said Fire Services Chief Edward Taomoto. Kula firefighters arrived at 6:34 a.m. to find the home destroyed.
"The roof had already collapsed, and only a few structural members remained standing," he said.
The fire was brought under control at 7:39 a.m. and extinguished at 10:11 a.m.
Fire crews needed to use an off-road mini-pumper truck via a four-wheel-drive road to reach the home located a quarter of a mile mauka of Piilani Highway, near Milepost 18.
The fire's cause remained undetermined. Damage was estimated at $175,000 to the structure and $20,000 to its contents.
Three fire companies, a water tanker and a battalion chief from Kula, Makawao and Kahului responded to the blaze.
