A former Maui Police Department officer was ordered to pay $250 in fines after he pleaded guilty Thursday to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Tristin Hickman, 36, of Kahului also pleaded guilty during the hearing in Wailuku District Court to lack of due care. The prosecution dismissed a reckless driving charge in exchange for his pleas.
Hickman was arrested at about 8:20 p.m. Jan. 25 when the vehicle he was driving struck a street sign on the median near the intersection of East Kamehameha Avenue and Hoohana Street, police said. A police DUI Task Force officer saw what happened, conducted a traffic stop and found Hickman behind the wheel, police said.
Hickman's driver's license was revoked for one year, although he can drive if he has an ignition interlock device installed in his vehicle. He was ordered to pay $541 in fees.
A restitution hearing for Hickman is set for Dec. 6.
A week before he was arrested in the DUI case, Hickman agreed to resign from his job as a police officer as part of a plea deal in a domestic violence case.
Originally charged with abusing his girlfriend while off duty last year, Hickman pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of harassment. He was placed on one year's probation. He was ordered not to consume alcohol or illegal drugs and to complete a domestic violence intervention program as part of his probation.
