The Maui News - Plans for the use of the old Kaupo School site and buildings and the repair of bridges and roads in East Maui and a discussion on a deer eradication project will be on the agenda for the Kaupo Community Association at 10 a.m. Saturday at the old school.
Management of the old Kaupo School property recently was transferred from the state to the county and a 55-year lease has been approved by the County Council and conferred to the community association.
This will allow the association to proceed with the historic restoration of the classroom and teachers' cottage buildings, built in 1923 and currently in disrepair. Much of the funding is in place and carpentry work will begin soon, the association news release said.
A process to determine how to use the site will begin after the buildings are restored, the news release said. Among possible uses, all noncommercial, could be outreach, educational, health, cultural, economic and emergency activities. The uses will depend on the community's wishes and the ability to find funding.
Lauren Armstrong, director of the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization, will present an update and listen to community comments on the long-range planning and funding for the major repair of the bridges and roadways in East Maui.
There also will be a short discussion on the deer eradication project currently underway by contract hunters from Kanaio to Kaupo Gap.
This meeting is free and open to the public. It will be followed by a potluck lunch.
