Paltin launches bid for West Maui council seat
Maui County lifeguard and former mayoral candidate Tamara Paltin has filed nomination papers to seek the West Maui residency seat on the County Council, she said in an announcement.
That council seat is being vacated by Council Member Elle Cochran, who is running for mayor.
In 2014, Paltin attempted to unseat Mayor Alan Arakawa, but she lost in the general election 25,435-18,162, getting 39.5 percent of the vote in her first bid for public office.
In announcing her candidacy, Paltin said that for the past four years she has continued her community advocacy by helping to facilitate community meetings in West Maui with planners, developers and Gov. David Ige. She frequently testifies before the County Council and at the state Legislature.
Now, she serves as president of the nonprofit Save Honolua Coalition. She works as an ocean safety lieutenant at D.T. Fleming Beach Park.
“Paltin is a community-based, community-driven candidate focused on county-level solutions to improve our quality of life,” her announcement says.
