An early-morning fire Thursday caused $200,000 in damage to a fourth-floor Kihei apartment, a fire official said.
The fire was reported at 4:44 a.m. at the Maui Parkshore Condominium at 2653 S. Kihei Road.
Firefighters arrived four minutes later to find heavy black smoke coming from the apartment unit, said Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro. Fire crews brought the fire under control at 5:05 a.m. and had it fully extinguished at 5:32 a.m.
A 41-year-old man, who was the only occupant when the fire broke out, managed to escape on his own, Yatsushiro said. The man was treated for smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
Fire investigators didn't find any evidence that the fire was intentionally set, Yatsushiro said, and the cause was classified as undetermined.
Damage to the 900-square-foot apartment was estimated at $175,000 to the structure and $25,000 to its contents. Most of the fire damage was in the bedroom area, with the rest of the unit affected by significant smoke damage, Yatsushiro said. An adjacent unit sustained minor damage to glass windows from the fire's heat.
The American Red Cross is assisting the resident.
A battalion chief and four companies from Wailea, Kihei and Kahului responded to the fire.
