Maui County timeshare occupancy in 1st quarter checks in at 95.6 percent

The timeshare business in Maui County logged a healthy first quarter with the highest average occupancy of 95.6 percent and the highest length of stay, 10.2 days, in the state, the Hawaii Tourism Authority reported earlier this month.
Occupancy in the first quarter was 1.5 percentage points higher than in 2017. The statewide occupancy rate was 92 percent.
The county recorded 70,042 timeshare visitors in the January-to-March period, up 4.5 percent from 2017.
The county's hotel occupancy during the first quarter was 80.2 percent. Timeshare visitors represented 9.7 percent of the county's visitor market.
Breaking down the timeshare visitors, 61.6 percent were owner occupants; 15.7 percent were exchangers; 13.8 percent were other transient guests (owners and exchangers who stayed beyond their allotted time); and 9 percent were market use.
Maui County timeshare properties reported a 0.2 percent decrease in resort operations workers but a 17.1 percent increase in sales and marketing employees during the first quarter. Those timeshare operations that participated in the survey reported a payroll expense of $32.4 million.
The report also said that county timeshare properties that provided data reported $8.5 million in state and county taxes during the first quarter.
The report, prepared by Kloninger & Sims Consulting, said that 79.3 percent of registered timeshare units, or 8,912 units, in 49 properties in the state participated in the survey. The report did not break down the reporting by county.
