Motorists detour for drive-thru voter registration

First photo: Maui County Deputy County Clerk Josiah Nishita assists voters registering Thursday morning at a drive-thru station set up in the parking lot at Kahului Shopping Center. The main deadline for voter registration for the Aug. 11 primary election was Thursday, but there still are opportunities to register. Voters can register and vote at an Early Walk in Voting site from July 30 to Aug. 9 and to register and vote at the voter’s assigned polling place on Election Day. The Office of Elections cautions that Election Day registration may take time because information has to be confirmed.

Second photo: Thoren Rebugio, a Life Scout from Boy Scout Troop 18, helps recent Lahainaluna High School graduate Kela Kauhaahaa register to vote Thursday morning. Rebugio helped organize the drive-thru voting station with the county clerk’s office as part of his Eagle Scout project. Kauhaahaa also picked up an absentee ballot because she is set to leave soon for Louisiana State University Shreveport and her freshman year of college. “I feel it is important,” Kauhaahaa said. “If you want some change, you have to do something about it. You really can’t complain if you don’t vote.”
