Four fire chief finalists named
Deputy Fire Chief Lionel Montalvo and Assistant Chief David Thyne are among four finalists to be the next Maui County fire chief.
The fire chief finalists also include Capt. Guy Danley and Capt. Kaulana Kino.
Montalvo, who has been serving as acting chief since last month, joined the department in August 1991 and was named deputy chief in August 2017.
Thyne, who joined the department in September 1987, was promoted to assistant chief in April 2009.
Danley, who joined the department in 1992, was promoted to captain in August 2010.
Kino joined the department in July 2002 and was promoted to captain in May 2015.
The nine-member Fire and Public Safety Commission will make the selection for the job that pays $151,200 a year. The fire chief is administrative head of the department that includes 306 uniformed firefighters, 21 support staff and 61 lifeguards.
The commission will meet at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20 at the ILWU Hall at 896 Lower Main St. in Wailuku to officially announce the candidates. An Aug. 27 meeting, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the same location, will include closed-session interviews with the finalists.
Public testimony on agenda items, including the selection of the fire chief, will be taken at both meetings.
The new chief would replace Chief Jeff Murray, who retired at the end of June after more than 29 years in the department, including the last 10 years as chief.
