Work on Waiopai Bridge will block traffic at night

The Maui News

Work to repair Waiopai Bridge in southeast Maui will completely close Piilani Highway to traffic at night from Monday to Oct. 22, the county Public Works Department said.

The original plan called for shutting down the bridge and access to East Maui from the Kanaio approach of Piilani Highway, which riled Kaupo residents. Discussions between residents, the county and the contractor, Grace Pacific LLC, resulted in the night-only closure.

The crossing at Mileposts 28 and 29 will not be passable from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m. on workdays. For those two weeks, the road will be open to daytime two-lane traffic from 4 a.m. to 7 p.m., the county news release said Tuesday.

From Oct. 22 to late February, there will be 24-hour one-lane alternating traffic.

Construction work will be active from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays, weather permitting, except for weekends and holidays.

The $1.1 million project will replace bridge railings, the concrete deck slab and approach metal guardrails, along with other work to the structure, which was built in 1982.

Kaupo residents, who would have to go through Hana to reach Central Maui during complete closures, have been notified of the construction.
