Woman back on Maui from Cayman Islands, charged with stealing from elderly woman

WAILUKU -- Seven years after she fled the state while awaiting trial for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from an elderly Kihei woman, a woman is back in jail on Maui.
Rosemarie Delatorre, now 60, had fought extradition for years before she was brought back from the Cayman Islands last month, said Deputy Prosecutor Carson Tani.
She was arrested on a $50,000 warrant that was issued in September 2011 when she didn't show up for her 2nd Circuit Court trial. At the time, Delatorre had been free on a $20,000 bail bond.
Delatorre was indicted on 22 charges, including first-degree identity theft, two counts of first-degree theft, 16 counts of second-degree forgery, two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and second-degree theft.
The crimes occurred from February 2006 to October 2008 while Delatorre was hired to work as a certified nursing assistant for an 86-year-old woman who was living at Kalama Heights Retirement Residence. The woman later died.
Delatorre is charged with stealing $73,000 from the woman by forging checks from the victim's account and using her without authorization.
Police records show Delatorre was back in custody on Maui on Oct. 15.
A Dec. 3 pretrial conference is scheduled for Delatorre, who is being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center.
