Annual dinner-auction event set for Hale Kau Kau
St. Theresa Church program serves hot meals to hungry, homebound people

Hale Kau Kau will hold its 20th annual dinner and auction on Feb. 9 at the Wailea Beach Resort-Marriott Maui, the nonprofit announced Wednesday.
The fundraising dinner generates about 40 percent of Hale Kau Kau's annual budget. The event will feature a buffet dinner, live and silent auctions and live entertainment. The reception and silent auction will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a live auction at 6 p.m. This year's theme is "Sharing the Love."
Hale Kau Kau serves and delivers hot meals every day out of the St. Theresa Church kitchen. On Wednesday, the program celebrated its 10,000th consecutive day of service. Since it began on Aug. 11, 1991, Hale Kau Kau has provided more than 1.5 million hot free meals to the community. The nonprofit employs a head cook, but most people who help cook, plate and deliver the meals are volunteers.
"For some clients, a dinner from Hale Kau Kau is their only meal of the day, and in other instances, the volunteer driver is their only visitor of the day," the Rev. Monsignor Terrence Watanabe said. "Support from the community makes this feeding ministry possible."
Individual seats for the fundraising dinner are $150 per person or $140 per person if purchasing 10 tickets. Sponsorships also are available.
