Haleakala park open with limited services

Sunrise viewing still available; roads and hiking trails open

The federal shutdown has not closed Haleakala National Park, with its roads, lookouts and trails remaining open, although with limited emergency and rescue services, according to an announcement Saturday.

Sunrise reservations are still required for entrance from 3 to 7 a.m., park officials said. To make reservations, go to www.recreation.gov. There will be no park entrance fee.

Visitors centers at the park summit, Kipahulu and at the Pools of Oheo were closed because of the government shutdown. Park interpretive and educational programs have been canceled.

The National Park Service will not provide services for campgrounds, including maintenance, janitorial work, check-in and check-out or cabin permits. Visitors to the Holua, Paliku, Hosmer Grove and Kipahulu tent campgrounds will not be asked to leave unless there are safety concerns.

Ben Hall, owner of Haleakala Bike Co., which does business as Haleakala Ecotours, said his business lost $17,000 in sales on the first day of the shutdown.

Also, because of the shutdown, park service social media and websites are not being monitored or updated and may not reflect current conditions.
