Molokai’s Hoolehua water system improvements gain federal funding

The Maui News

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing a nearly $7.5 million loan and a $1.59 million grant for improvements to the Hoolehua water system that serves 2,000 residents on Molokai.

The project includes a 1-megawatt photovoltaic system planned for construction on 9 acres adjacent to an existing well, according to an announcement from Assistant to the Secretary for Rural Development Anne Hazlett.

Other plans include installation of a 1,000-gallon, above-ground fuel storage tank. The project will eliminate the need to purchase power and increase backup energy capabilities and system reliability during emergencies.

The exact funding amounts are $7,455,000 for the loan and a $1,592,333 grant.

The department also is providing a $4.1 million loan and a nearly $2 million grant for upgrades and improvements to a farm lot water system in Anahola, Kauai.

The Hawaii funding is part of $1.2 million the USDA is investing in infrastructure for 936,000 rural residents in 46 states, the announcement says.

“Access to water is a key driver for economic opportunity and quality of life in rural communities,” Hazlett said. “USDA is committed to being a strong partner to rural communities in building prosperity through modern water infrastructure.”

Starting at $4.62/week.
