The National Weather Service canceled a winter weather watch for Haleakala and issued a winter weather advisory instead from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 a.m. today.
A strong upper level trough was predicted to combine with an area of moisture near Maui to produce winter weather above the 9,000-foot elevation level. Periods of freezing rain were expected at the summit of Haleakala, along with a slight chance of snow showers and ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch.
The National Weather Service warned of reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions.
A high surf advisory was also in effect for the north- and west-facing shores of Molokai and north-facing shores of Maui from 12 a.m. today through 6 a.m. Thursday. Surf of 10 to 15 feet was predicted through Tuesday night, with surf of 15 to 20 feet through Wednesday along north-facing shores of Molokai and Maui. Surf of 8 to 12 feet was expected Tuesday night, rising to 10 to 15 feet through today along west-facing shores of Molokai.
Meanwhile, a small-craft advisory also was in effect for Maui County's windward waters from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. today. The National Weather Service predicted seas of 8 to 12 feet starting Tuesday evening. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in such hazardous conditions.
