WAILUKU -- Continued mental health treatment was ordered for a man who climbed through a McDonald's drive-through window in what his attorney called a "cry for help."
Skye Recopuerto, 32, was placed on one year's probation when he was sentenced Thursday after he pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of first-degree criminal trespassing, as well as resisting arrest and harassment.
He was arrested in the early morning of March 15, 2017, after entering McDonald's restaurant in Pukalani through its drive-through window.
Once inside, Recopuerto headed toward the office, saying, "Please help me," said Deputy Prosecutor Johann Smith.
He said Recopuerto pushed an employee.
While not causing any injury, "he did cause alarm," Smith said.
"No one got hurt. He didn't try to rob the store," Smith said. "We're satisfied this plea agreement is a fair resolution."
Defense attorney Jon Apo said it was "a cry for help on the part of Skye."
Recopuerto also pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of second-degree bail jumping in another case.
"Skye has come a long way through this process," Apo said. "One of the positive things that came out is his father has moved back from overseas and is now providing the support Skye could have used a while back. So I think everything is back on track."
Recopuerto said he has a couple of jobs lined up.
"Thank you guys for helping me," he said.
Second Circuit Judge Peter Cahill said the outcome was appropriate.
"This undoubtedly was a bizarre circumstance here," Cahill said.
"If you're going to go to McDonald's, please go in through the front door," he told Recopuerto. "Because people get scared. It's very, very frightening because bad things can happen unintentionally."
Recopuerto was given credit for 10 days he spent in jail.
