A woman has been arrested for trying to abduct a 5-year-old boy while he was shopping with his mother in Walmart on Saturday, police said.

Brisa Nip, 44, who has no local address, was charged with attempted kidnapping. Her bail was set at $20,000.

The boy's mother reported that she was shopping in the automotive section of the Kahului store at about 12:15 p.m. Saturday when a woman walked up from behind and grabbed the boy, who was standing 2 to 3 feet behind his mother, police said. The unknown woman tried to lift the boy off the ground and tried to walk away with him, police said.

The boy's mother turned around and pushed the woman, who let go of the boy and walked away, police said.

The mother went outside with the boy and two older children and called police.

Police officers couldn't locate the suspect in the store Saturday.

At about noon Sunday, officers located Nip, who matched the description of the suspect, in the parking lot of 444 Hana Highway in Kahului, police said.

During an initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Nip was ordered to have no contact with the mother and her three children and to stay away from Walmart.

At the request of the defense, proceedings in Nip's case were suspended while she undergoes mental health examinations.
