A 47-year-old female resident is in critical condition after suffering major burns over more than half of her body when a structure fire leveled her West Maui home Saturday afternoon, according to the Maui Fire Department.

Maui firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire in Kahoma Valley at 4:17 p.m. Crews from Lahaina and Napili responded to find that a small, one-story structure had "already burned to the ground," according to the department.

The resident was found to have sustained major burns to more than 50 percent of her body. She was initially treated by firefighters and medics, then transported via Maui Medevac to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Fire crews brought the fire under control at approximately 4:50 pm. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.

Damages are estimated at $8,000 to the structure and its contents.
