A woman was taken to the hospital after injuring her knee at Kamaole Beach Park I in Kihei on Saturday morning, according to a fire official.

At 7:38 a.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to assist a lifeguard at the beach park who was tending to a 70-year-old woman who had injured her knee in the surf while entering the water, Assistant Chief Val Martin said. The injury was serious enough for the woman to be taken to the hospital. Emergency personnel carried her on a backboard from the beach to a waiting ambulance.

Martin was unsure whether the woman was a resident or visitor.
