The 38-year-old Maui man who was pulled unresponsive from the waters off Haneo'o Bay has died at Maui Memorial Medical Center, police confirmed on Tuesday.
Acting police spokesman Lt. John Sang identified the man as Brad Apo.
Apo was found facedown and unresponsive about 50 feet offshore on Sunday, according to the Maui Fire Department.
At 5:07 p.m., fire and EMS crews were called to Haneo'o Bay, also known as the "sandbar" area near Hamoa Beach in Hana. Another person who was believed to be in the water also was unaccounted for.
Bystanders had removed Apo from the water and started CPR by the time first responders arrived and took over resuscitation efforts. The missing person swam to shore soon after the arrival of fire and EMS crews.
Apo regained a pulse and was transported to the Hana Airport, where he was flown to Kahului and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.
Sang said Apo died in the hospital on Tuesday.
Engine 7 from Hana, Rescue 10 from Kahului and Medic 6 from Hana responded to the incident.
Ocean conditions at the time were choppy with waves of 2 to 3 feet and winds from the east of more than 15 mph.
