Fire at Kihei resort displaces 2 people
Two people were displaced after a fire broke out in a unit at the Kihei Beach Resort on Sunday afternoon, according to the Maui Fire Department.
The high-rise structure fire was reported at 12:47 p.m. at 760 S. Kihei Road. The fifth-floor unit where the fire began was unoccupied when crews arrived on scene. They helped one person in the unit above to safety and contained the fire to the unit of origin.
The fire was under control by 1:32 p.m. and caused smoke damage to the unit above. Total damage estimates were not immediately available.
South Kihei Road was closed between North Kihei Road and Uwapo Road for about two hours as fire apparatus and hoses blocked the roadway. It reopened at about 2:30 p.m., the Fire Department said.
Responding to the scene were an engine from Kihei; engine, tanker and ladder crews from Wailea; engine and rescue crews from Kahului; an engine from Makawao; a battalion chief; and a fire investigator.
The cause is under investigation.
The Red Cross announced Sunday afternoon that it was also responding to the scene to make sure the displaced people had access to food, shelter and clothing. Caseworkers will continue to follow up in coming weeks.
