Fire destroys two-story home, displaces 8

A fire in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day destroyed a home in Wailuku, displacing eight people, according to the Maui Fire Department and the Red Cross.
Crews received the call at 1:01 a.m. Friday of a structure fire at Liholiho Street in Wailuku. Engine 1 from Wailuku; Engine 10, Rescue 10, Hazmat 10 and Tanker 10 from Kahului; a battalion chief and a fire inspector responded to the fire, which was extinguished by 4 a.m.
The fire displaced four adults and four children and destroyed the two-story, 2,400-square-foot home as well as three vehicles. The Fire Department estimated the losses at $225,000 for the structure, $200,000 for the contents and $70,000 for the vehicles.
The cause was undetermined, the Fire Department said.
Volunteers from the Red Cross Maui County Chapter responded to the fire to coordinate emergency aid. Caseworkers will continue to follow up with the residents in the coming weeks to provide referrals, guidance or additional assistance as needed.
The Red Cross said that volunteers have been training to maintain social distancing and follow proper safety procedures to safely assist community members during the pandemic.
