A 33-year-old Waiehu man has died after his vehicle crashed into a utility pole on Friday afternoon, according to the Maui Police Department.

The collision occurred at about 4:53 p.m. on Waiko Road, one-tenth of a mile west of Waiale Road in Wailuku.

According to the preliminary investigation, a green 2009 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound on Waiko Road at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control, crossed left of center onto the opposing shoulder and crashed into a utility pole.

The driver died at the scene. Police said the victim's identity is being withheld for 24 hours to allow his family to notify extended family and friends.

Police said the investigation also revealed that the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time, and that the air bags did deploy.

Speed is suspected as a factor. The involvement of drugs and alcohol is pending, as the investigation is ongoing, police said.

This is the 15th traffic fatality in Maui County in 2022, compared to 11 at the same time last year.
