Well, the South Maui high school is now scheduled to be ready in time for the 2021-22 school year.
Last week, state Sen. Roz Baker announced that Gov. David Ige released $92.5 million for phase two construction of the facility.
According to a story in Friday's Maui News, Baker said: "I'm delighted he has expedited the release of the funds the Legislature has authorized to ensure construction of the new high school progresses. The South Maui community has waited such a long time for this school to be built. These funds are critical to getting classrooms and other school structures built."
Freshmen and perhaps sophomores will populate the school the first year, with junior and senior classes following in consecutive years.
A little over a quarter of a century after the need for a high school in South Maui was identified, there could be students emerging with diplomas from the long-imagined institution in 2025 or 2026.
The first phase of construction -- infrastructure for the school -- will begin this summer and take about 18 months to complete, according to the story. Goodfellow Bros. has already been awarded the contract for that first phase.
Phase two -- construction of classroom buildings, a joint library-cafeteria, administration building and physical education room -- will follow. Parking lots, a clay court and a temporary playing field are also included in that phase.
Phase two will go out to bid in May or June, the story said.
The third, and final, phase will include a gymnasium, basketball court, tennis courts, a track and field and facilities for music electives.
As readers know, we have expressed skepticism that the school would ever be built. Our hats are off to Sen. Baker for her relentless fight to keep pushing this needed project forward.
