Hawaii Sen. Josh Green wants homelessness classified as a medical condition under state law -- like diabetes, cancer, schizophrenia, etc.
The bill would require insurance companies to cover "treatment" i.e., housing.
Green, an emergency department physician, claims Medicaid savings, citing a recent study finding health care costs for chronically homeless people, dropped 43 percent when they had decent housing.
Green believes that a prescription for "housing" cures homelessness, hopelessness, helplessness, loneliness, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, etc.
If life was only this simple.
The problem is high food and housing costs, combined with low wages or no jobs and homeless from other states that give Hawaii the highest rate of homelessness of all U.S. states.
Perhaps we should also classify being a politician as a medical condition -- irrational, grandiose, confused, with poor insight and judgment.
