Maui’s recycling options shrinking
Maui now has two fewer items that can be recycled: magazines and junk mail. The recycling centers will no longer take them. Just throw them in the trash so that they can rot in the landfill.
We have not been able to recycle batteries for over a year now. We can only recycle No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, while the Mainland can recycle all plastics.
It is too expensive to bale these materials and send them off-island. Our landfill cannot keep filling up forever. Instead of paying to maintain it, we should spend some of that money to recycle almost everything.
Composting green waste should also be mandatory for all households. My green composting can fills up for my every two-week collection, which also means it does not go to the landfill.
We need to rethink how we treat our island home.
