On my way to the Coach Spencer Shiraishi Memorial Pool, which serves so many people from seniors to Special Olympics to first-time swimmers and to swim clubs, on Kaulawahine Street in Kahului, I have noticed the growing number of homeless encamped nearby.
It appears that something akin to "safe zones" being implemented in Hawaii merits a closer review as well as more efforts for additional shelters, mental health services, etc. Encampments on the sidewalk in this area may become problematic for this neighborhood unless a viable, long-term humane solution is readily found.
