Telescope should inspire pride, not divisiveness

It is unfortunate that we have two opposing sides to the telescope atop Haleakala. The discoveries made by the telescope have been marvelous and benefit all mankind.

All Hawaiians — native and more recent arrivals — should feel proud of this gift of knowledge to the world. I could see the controversy if a Walmart were being built on Haleakala, but the telescope is something that benefits all humans. We are all in this together; there should be no “us” and “them.”
