Let’s not repeat cycle of no action on S. Kihei Road

South Kihei Road from McDonalds to the Maui Lu Resort has always flooded because of its topography and restrictions of the culverts under the road.

Improvements of $3.7 million from McDonalds to the Koa Resort were scheduled in the last year of Mayor James Apana's term but was nixed by the mayor to save 10 monkeypod trees.

Director David Goode was the deputy director under Charles Jencks at the time and knows the loss of money, time and improvements that could have mitigated pedestrian, vehicular and flooding impacts.

The Kulanihakoi Bridge replacement is another project that is being threatened. This $4.7 million project needs to proceed in order to increase flow under the road and dampen the effects of floodwaters from more development.

Let's not wait another 20 years before significant improvements are planned, only to be shelved at the last minute and the cycle of no action repeated.
