Put a teacher in the state House of Representatives

2 min read

On Aug. 11, put a teacher in the House and vote Justin Hughey for District 8 state House of Representatives. As a teacher I know he is the candidate that will fight for economic, social and environmental justice for both his students and the people of Hawaii. He is the only candidate that is dedicated to fully provide schools our keiki deserve.

As a special education teacher, Justin Hughey decided to get involved in HSTA because his classroom was literally falling apart. While his classroom ceiling was falling in, he became an advocate for the schools our keiki deserve. I have seen his commitment and passion for his students and the people of Hawaii.

Hughey is the only candidate that fully supports our constitutional amendment that asks millionaires and billionaires to pay a property surcharge on investment properties in order to provide additional funding for schools our keiki deserve. This is important to me because over 50 percent of new teachers leave the profession within five years, 30,800 students do not have a highly qualified teacher in every class, teachers need resources for their overcrowded classrooms (28-plus students), we can reduce class sizes to those that reflect private schools, and we can provide schools our keiki deserve.

As teachers strike throughout the nation, it is important to understand that schools in Hawaii are worse off. We must rise to the challenge and transform our public schools.

Please vote for HSTA's former vice president Justin Hughey. Put a teacher in the House.
